10cc came to The Royal Concert Hall last night and promised a selection of their hits and more, and they certainly delivered. Not realising just how many of their songs are instantly recognisable until you hear them, for many in this packed crowd the memories just came flooding back.
Assembling a band after Godley and Creme left in 1976 and Stewart five years later, Gouldman called upon his old team mate and drummer Paul Burgess who has been with him since 1976, and Rick Fenn, the second guitarist that was recruited after Creme left the band. Add keyboardist Keith Hayman and the multi talented Nick Wilson who handled all of the higher vocals with some style, and what you have is a very tight band who deliver harmonies that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Starting off with Wall Street Shuffle and all its signature 10cc harmonised vocals, the evening just got better with Arts For Arts Sake and its subliminal guitar playing and Life Is A Minestrone had the crowd singing along.
The Dean And I showcased Wilson’s excellent falsetto which was particularly impressive whilst the funky swampy groove during Good Morning Judge had the crowd foot tapping along. Old Wild Men was particularly poignant and the quintet impressed with their eleven minute Feel The Benefit from 10cc’s 1977 album Deceptive Bends which satisfied the diehard fans with an excellent understated guitar solo from Fenn.
For Somewhere In Hollywood, Kevin Godley appeared on the back screen in monotone footage to deliver the lead vocals which made the whole song sound especially spooky. But it was The Things We Do For Love that energised the crowd before the psychedelic sounding I’m Mandy Fly Me showed that 10cc are like a travelling juke box.
The haunting I’m Not In Love was delivered beautifully, enhanced by superb lighting which completely surpassed expectations and got the first standing ovation of the night.
Finishing the main set with the fabulous Dreadlock Holiday, 10cc had taken this crowd on a total musical journey. Back on stage for the highlight of the evening, a barber shop a capella version of their first hit single Donna which was delivered full of humour and mischief before they finished with the third of their number one hits, an outstanding Rubber Bullets.
It has to be said, last night we didn’t like 100cc, we loved them!
