INTERVIEW: Charlotte Devaney

Charlotte Devaney, global DJ, Producer, Presenter, Model and Actor chats with Kevin Cooper about her musical inspirations, starring in her first A list Hollywood movie, working with Snoop Dogg and Fatman Scoop and the release of her new single, ‘Bass Dunk’.

Charlotte Devaney is a British DJ, Producer, Model, Presenter and Actor from London, England.

From the bright lights of Hollywood, in which she starred in ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’ with Simon Pegg and Jeff Bridges to name but a few, she can also be seen spinning tunes at some of the world’s most prestigious clubs. Her high energy and fun performances hosting the Mic as well as DJing always get a crowd rocking! Charlotte’s track ‘Flip it’ featuring Snoop Dogg was released last year, with the follow up ‘Bass Dunk’ featuring Fatman Scoop & Lady Leshurr to be released shortly. Whilst currently in the studio making her own tracks, she took time out to speak to Kevin Cooper and this is what she had to say:

Hi Charlotte how are you?

I’m fine Kevin, how you doing?

I’m good thanks; how is life treating you?

It’s very good thank you.

You are now a successful DJ, Producer, Presenter, Model and Actor, which do you prefer?

To be honest Kevin, music is my love and passion. I am a very creative person and I have now been in the entertainment business for a few years. During that time I have been lucky to do a bit of everything; I started as a dancer and then moved into modelling, acting and I have also been lucky to have done some presenting. But I have to say that music is my thing.

How did music start for you?

A few years ago now I used to be a dancer on the Rave scene, so I have always been interested in music. I knew a lot of the DJ’s who were working around me, and simply that’s how it started for me. I’ve always listened to music since I was really young and have always felt that music was in my bones since that very early age.

So who were you listening to when you were growing up?

There were several different people Kevin, everything from Bob Marley to Fabio Grooverider, LTJ Bukem, and all that kind of stuff. I was big into my rave music but at the same time I was also into Hip Hop.

What was the first record that you bought?

God (laughter) I can’t remember (hysterical laughter). No Kevin I will tell you, the first record that I ever bought, was Tiffany ‘I Think Were Alone Now’, so there you go (laughter). I was very young at the time so that’s my excuse (laughter).

Who did you first see performing live in concert?

That’s easy Kevin that was Jamiroquai. I saw him and Lauren Hill quite close together but Jamiroquai was the first.

Who has been your biggest musical inspiration?

That’s a tough one as there have been so many. I would have to say my boyfriend, Fabio (laughter).  We have been together now for quite a long time, and he has really helped me loads with my career. He has carved a musical genre and I look up to him a lot. I always listen to him and take his advice so yes, he has to be my biggest inspiration Kevin.

So what would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?

That’s difficult because I’ve had quite a few. Making the movie ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’ with Simon Pegg, Megan Fox and Jeff Bridges was a massive highlight for me. In fact it was possibly the biggest moment for me, being in an A List Hollywood movie. Also meeting Snoop Dogg and being able to work with him, and then working with Fatman Scoop; that was an amazing experience as he is a lovely guy. So I would have to say that those three are the biggest highlights so far.

So how was it making the movie ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’ with Simon Pegg?

It was amazing Kevin, and like I said, it is possibly the highlight of my career to be honest.

So moving on from that what do you think that you have gained from working with Snoop Dogg and Fatman Scoop?

It has definitely made people take me more seriously as a DJ and a Producer. It has also elevated my name to a point where it has changed people’s perception of me professionally I guess. It also got me a lot of live work, and I have now been signed to a few different labels around the world, so yes, there has been a lot to gain from it.

I have to ask you, do you have any plans to perform here in Nottingham any time in the future?

Yes, I hope so. We are trying to plan a tour at this very moment. I have been to Nottingham before and I had a really good night there last year so yes, I hope to be back playing at Oceana.

You set-up your own dance company, Narni Shakers, how is that going?

Yes Kevin, Narni Shakers is still going strong. Obviously I don’t dance anymore but I am still behind the whole thing and run the company. The girls are still really busy and dance at all of the big high-profile music events around the world so yes, they are very, very busy.

Now, the new single, ‘Bass Dunk’ do you have a release date for it as yet?

We do Kevin but I’m not going to tell you at the moment (laughter). I will be announcing the release date in the next couple of weeks.
