Gary Barlow arrived at the Motorpoint Arena last night to deliver some of Take That’s hits, solo songs from his 2020 album, Music Played By Humans and even some Christmas songs from 2021’s The Dream Of Christmas and what a Christmas cracker of a show it was.
Emerging from a cloud of dry ice, Barlow brought a touch of Vegas to a cold Nottingham night with his bright red suit, sequinned clad showgirls, and a brass band that helped him rip through highlights from last year’s album. Opening with Who’s Driving This Thing he was off tap dancing down the stairs, clicking his fingers. Following up with Incredible and The Big Bass Drum he finished this part of the show with Elita.
Santa appears on stage with Barlow as he begins the festive part of the show. Winter Wonderland is followed by Wonderful Christmas Time before he climbs aboard a pantomime sleigh with Santa for a spirited rendition of Sleigh Ride.
As Christmas fades away Barlow appears on the B stage dressed in a black military jacket, for his solo work which includes Since I Saw You Last, Open Road and Let Me Go but the highlight of this part of the show was undoubtedly Take That’s A Million Love Songs with Mike Steven’s beautiful saxophone solo.
Back on the main stage for a mash up of It Only Takes A Minute and Relight My Fire which really raised the tempo, he was joined by Boyzone’s Ronan Keating much to the delight of this screaming crowd for Back For Good and Could It Be Magic.
Finishing with a speedy run through of some of Take That’s greatest hits such as Shine, Cry and Rule The World, this magical night was brought to a close with everyone waving their arms about for Never Forget as confetti fell all around them like snow.
