With a stage adorned with metal platforms and scaffolding to accommodate his very talented five piece band and two backing singers, Will Young surprised the packed Royal Concert Hall last night by making an appearance from a six foot parcel that had been left on the stage, much to the delight of the crowd.

Opening with Love Revolution, with its classic Motown feel, he set a very high bar for the rest of the evening that did not disappoint.

It has been seventeen years since Young secured first place on Pop Idol, and since then his openness about his battles with PTSD and depression and his candid views on LGBT have only served to endear him to his fans, and with the release of his seventh album, Lexicon, Young showed that he still has something to offer.

Delivering tracks from all six of his previous albums, and only airing two new songs, Ground Running and My Love, it was a real nostalgic trip for the audience.

A slower I Just Want A Lover saw him climb up the scaffolding to join the drummer, whilst Runaway and Come On showcased his excellent vocals. At some point two step ladders were produced with a plank between them which saw Young precariously climb to the middle for an absolutely stunning cover of The Beatles’ Golden Slumbers which was a goose bump inducing moment.

With so many songs in his catalogue there was a medley of All Time Love, Love Is a Matter Of Distance and Love The One You’re With which was a real treat.

For Who Am I? and Joy, he emerged dressed in white as a Captain with an inexplicable blow up ship around his waist, which when removed to reveal Young wearing shorts for a nostalgic crescendo of Grace, Your Game and Switch It On, brought the crowd to their feet.

With fans favourites, Leave Right Now and Evergreen closing the show, his pure and delicate voice had never wavered below perfection all evening.
