The Motorpoint Arena was almost packed to capacity and the floor teeming with eager fans on Wednesday night as Volbeat, the Danish rockers from Copenhagen, wasted no time electrifying the crowd with their unique fusion of metal, rockabilly and classic rock swagger.
Opening with The Devil’s Bleeding Crown which saw front man Michael Poulson’s gritty vocals instantly draw the crowd in before they rolled straight into Lola Montez when the whole Arena seemed to come alive in unison, the crowd’s voices echoing the chorus. The band kept it moving with Sad Man’s Tongue which included a surprise nod to Johnny Cash’s Ring Of Fire before introducing new song, the heavy Demonic Depression.
With a deep catalogue to draw from they delivered a number of songs from their earlier works including fan favourites Shotgun Blues, By A Monster’s Hand, The Devil Rages On and Die To Live which saw Kaspar Boye Larson excel on bass and drummer Jon Larson leading the way.
A really unexpected moment came with the song In The Barn Of The Goat Giving Birth To Satan’s Spawn In A Dying World Of Doom which was as wild as it sounds. Making great use of the walkway to get closer to the crowd, the band’s catchy hooks and driving rhythms fuelled numerous sing alongs as Volbeat’s signature blend of heavy sound filled the Arena.
Their hit parade continued with Time Will Heal, Black Rose and Seal The Deal as they let their music take centre stage with just enough between song banter to keep the energy level high. The penultimate song was what the crowd had been waiting for, the much anticipated Still Counting which saw a number of children join the band on stage before a mash up of A Warrior’s Call and Pool Of Booze, Booze, Booza brought the night to a huge finish.
The band’s energy had been contagious, blending their pounding riffs with a melodic accessibility that saw even the casual fan singing along, showing exactly why Volbeat are able to headline Arena tours and immerse their fans in every moment.
