Britpop icons Suede are back touring to celebrate the release of their tenth studio album, Antidepressants and they were on stage at Rock city on Thursday night performing to a sold out crowd to celebrate its release.
Opening with the album’s debut single Disintegrate, the crowd were immediately put on notice that they were in for an energetic performance from an age defying front man, Brett Anderson. Following up they leapt straight into Dancing With The Europeans, the third single to be released from the 2025 album which was blindingly brilliant live with its anthemic chorus which provoked an early sing along.
The title track of the album was up next, an atmospheric number that had the crowd focusing on the newer material, whilst older fans favourites such as Trash and Animal Nitrate were greeted wildly and enthusiastically. Continuing with a repertoire of belters both new and old, Outsiders from 2016’s Night Thoughts was followed by new song, June Rain with its raw emotion grabbing the crowd’s attention.
There was a fantastic rendition of It Starts And Ends With You which was followed up with She Still Leads Me On, Shadow Self and Trance State before Neil Coding sat at the piano and treated the crowd to a painfully beautiful Down which silenced them as Anderson allowed his voice to carry through Rock City sending tingles down spines and raising goose bumps with its raw and powerful delivery.
Closing the main set with So Young, Metal Mickey, and a relentless performance of Beautiful Ones, they sauntered off the stage leaving behind a cheering crowd. The Britpoppers returned for a timeless rendition of The Only Way I Can Love You that brought the gig to a magnificent close.
Despite a seven year hiatus in the early noughties, Suede remains one of the enduring greats. With impeccable vocals from Anderson and overwhelming passion and raw intensity from the rest of the band, Suede had yet again managed to stun the crowd leaving them eager for more, as they showed that their new material is just as satisfying and impactful as the first songs they released more than three decades ago.
