On Saturday night at the Royal Concert Hall, Midge Ure, embarked upon another tour and may have been tempted to deliver a straight set list of his greatest hits, but for this tour he wanted to do something different and set about delivering a show that was a feast for the eyes with a clever use of lights and images to give an immersive experience.
The venue lights dimmed and the intro music swelled as Ure emerged striding purposefully towards his synth. As he began the opening chords to A Different View he was joined on stage by Cole Stacey, Joseph O’Keefe and from the side Russell Field who helped layer the harmonies as they performed the stunning first track from the new album A Man Of Two Worlds.
The first 45 minutes of the set were outstanding, uninterrupted with each song flowing seamlessly. There were no interludes, no asides to the crowd and after each song there was barely a pause for applause. They launched straight into Visage’s Again We Love before delighting fans with a dynamic performance of the superb Call Of The Wild.
Other highlights included Ultravox’s The Ascent, Your Name (Has Slipped My Mind Again), and the brilliant Wastelands. There was the mesmerizing Astradyne before the heavenly Lament captured the atmosphere within the venue as the crowd sang along in full voice to the classic.
Monster completed the deep cut section of the show as he brought out the heavy hitters giving Vienna an airing causing goose bumps as the song’s lamenting verse gave way to the dramatic chorus bring the crowd to their feet in appreciation.
Still on their feet for the up tempo Reap The Wild Wind, the ever popular If I Was, The Voice, Visage’s Fade To Grey before the main set ended with Dancing With Tears In My eyes which felt strangely celebratory given the subject of the song.
Back on stage for a rousing performance of Phil Lynott’s Yellow Pearl before the band brought the evening to a triumphant close with Ultravox’s Hymn having delivered a set list that had been a wonderful blend of songs and instrumentals, a set that had blown the crowd away.
