On Tuesday night a packed crowd at the Motorpoint Arena were transported back in time for a true nostalgic party and a night to remember. After twenty-five years apart , the multi platinum selling band Five are finally back together again, reuniting with all original members for a massive UK arena tour which sold out within three hours.
Mixing swagger, harmonies and boundless energy, Scott Robinson, Ritchie Neville, Sean Conlon, Abz Love and Jason ‘J’ Brown immediately reminded the crowd as to why they were one of Britain’s defining late nineties pop acts. With many of the crowd not having been born at the height of Five’s success, they were instantly on their feet for set opener Slam Dunk (Da Funk), where they stayed for the whole 90 minute set.
A horseshoe shaped walkway allowed the group to have close contact with their fans as they followed up with Shake and Got The Feelin’ moving effortlessly and replaying their most famous dance moves in complete synchronicity.
Vocally they were very strong as Conlon’s velvety tones and Neville’s harmonies really shone on Until The Time Is Through and It’s The Things You Do, which were undoubtedly the sets two finest ballads. Fans favourite When the Lights Go Out was met with frenzied enthusiasm complete with video inspired bursts of flames along the front of the stage.
Slipping immediately back to the days when they started out, there was laughter, jokes and tight choreography along with impeccable vocals on the likes of Lay All Your Lovin’ On Me which slowed down the tempo whilst Human allowed Conlon to shine.
Partyline 555-On-Line was one of the punchiest offerings whilst Straight Up Funk was exactly that. Let’s Dance came near the end of the main set and was a light show highlight, which led nicely into Everybody Get Up and a mass sing along. For the encore there was a euphoric medley of Jump Around, Place Your Hand, Get Lucky and final song Keep On Movin’ which turned the Arena into a full blown party.
Five were definitely back having delivered a night of pure pop magic. They might have aged a little but for this appreciative crowd it was really a night of undiluted fun.
