The energy was palpable from the moment Australian mega rockers Airbourne took to the stage at Rock City on Wednesday night, with the packed crowd ready to rock the night away.
Despite not reappearing with a new album, they were back and taking no prisoners. Opening with the incredibly appropriate Ready To Rock which set out their stall for the following ninety minutes. Following up with the fist pumping Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast and Burnout The Nitro, front man Joel O’Keeffe elevated the excitement to a whole new level.
Built on the back of their love for no frills hard rock, they still know how to deliver in the live environment, as shown with Back In The Game which was speeded up and felt truly frantic. During Girls In Black, Joel ventured into the crowd, perched on a roadies shoulders and spraying beer in to the air, delivering an epic moment that solidified the band’s reputation for putting on an unforgettable show.
Alongside Joel it was impossible to ignore Ryan O’Keeffe’s drumming, with Brett Tyrell firing up the supporting riffs whilst embracing every stage moment. And who can forget their long term player Justin Street, who brought tight backing chords into the mix, on the likes of their standard classics Bottom Of The Well and Breakin’ Outta Hell which left the crowd in awe.
Their heartfelt ode to Motorhead’s Lemmy, It’s All For Rock ‘n’ Roll was very well received, before main set closer Stand Up For Rock ‘n’ Roll saw the crowd go wild. The whirl of the air raid siren marked the encore with the instantly loved Live It Up giving the crowd their final minutes of an electrifying experience before the tempo was slowed down for Joel to throw beer at the Rock City crowd for the last time before the thunderous Runnin’ Wild ended the evening with a jumping frenzy.
Airbourne are the pure essence of rock and roll, delivering foot tapping, heart racing, smile making entertainment. As high octane rock goes, they have always been one of the best and their unfettered rock and roll will always have a place.
