After a two year break which saw Myles Kennedy tour with Guns ‘n’ Roses legend, Slash, Mark Tremonti tour with his heavy metal side project, Tremonti and joined Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips on a Creed reunion tour, Alter Bridge were back together at the Motorpoint Arena on Thursday night to deliver a show that was well worth the wait.
Before a packed and enthusiastic crowd, the Arena lights dimmed, raising the atmosphere to another level as the band stepped out into the spotlight and opened with Silent Divide, the opening track of the new eponymous album as it opened with a powerful guitar riff before the bass and drums kicked in, setting the bar high for the rest of the set.
Delving into the past with Addicted To Pain and Cry Of Achilles, the sight of Kennedy and Tremonti working in tandem, seamlessly swapping guitar solos and synchronising their melodies was a sight to behold.
Delivering a crisp tight performance, new songs such as Playing Aces and the urgent Tested And Able fitted into the sixteen song set perfectly, complementing the older material so well. Part way through the set Tremonti took centre stage on the vocals for Burn It Down, the change in pace and tone being a great pivotal point in the middle of the set.
Broken Wings was still as beautifully powerful as ever, and Ghost Of Days Gone By was sublime in a live setting. Open Your Eyes, the band’s first ever single in 2004, felt as impactful as ever and brought with it a mass sing along from the crowd.
Bass player Marshall anchored the performance with precision and enabled Kennedy, whose vocals were on point throughout and Tremonti to impress with their high energy guitar playing and Phillip’s drumming which drove the band’s punchy rhythms.
Kennedy delivered a moving acoustic start to the power ballad Watch Over You as the Arena was lit up with mobile phone torches. Ending the main set with Metalingus which was euphoric, spine tingling and majestic and paved the way for the encore of Blackbird and Isolation which closed out a spellbinding performance and was a fitting finale to an incredible night of rock.
