Blues rock guitarist and singer songwriter Chantel McGregor has a great blend of blues, rock and storytelling which has a way of drawing in the crowd as she did on Tuesday night as she took to the stage at The Robin in Bilston.
Touring to promote the release of her latest album, The Healing, she launched into album opener I Will Breathe with its powerful riff that immediately got the crowd nodding along. Joining her on stage was bassist Colin Sutton and drummer Thom Gardner who rocked out Broken Heartless Liar.
Slowing things down for the haunting and atmospheric Eternal Dream with its delicate solo and gentle melody, McGregor’s control over her instrument was mesmerizing with every note hitting with precision and purpose. One of the more commercial tracks from the new album, Stand On My Own was very well received as her voice carried a depth of emotion that perfectly complimented her intricate guitar riffs, creating a dynamic performance which kept the crowd enthralled.
McGregor’s blend of technical skill and emotional depth is unmatched and her ability to make even a smallish venue like The Robin feel like the biggest stage in the world is a testament to her talent. Launching into three songs from her 2015 album Lose Control, Walk On Land, Your Fever and Anaesthetise, all saw the crowd fully immersed into her music.
Crazy Little Voodoo is followed by Tears with its shimmering guitar work and Take The Power with its massively brooding riff was exceptional, a fifteen minute epic which was no means repetitive, never ostentatious and under no circumstances tedious as the crowd hung on every note and fed off the infectious energy of the music.
Beginning with its haunting guitar intro, Echoes built into a spine tingling guitar solo before they launched into Undercover, a great rock track, driven along brilliantly by the dynamic duo, Colin and Thom. April was an astonishing instrumental, with the bass pulsating like an adrenaline stimulated heartbeat and of course McGregor’s fluid emotive playing.
An undoubted highlight was the epic; mind blowing, incredible Truth Will Out! with its stunning guitar work and an incredible vocal performance before the set was brought to a close with the deeply emotional The Healing.
McGregor had delivered a set that was anthemic rock, progressive in nature and sound. Her show at The Robin wasn’t just a gig; it was a celebration of her artistry and a testament to her natural ability.
