It was another sold out crowd at Rock City on Thursday night who welcomed Manchester’s four piece band Everything Everything who are touring to promote their seventh and latest studio album, Mountainhead.
Swathed in blue light, the band took to the stage to rapturous applause as they opened with their hypnotic single, The Mad Stone which they followed up with Mountainhead’s opening track, Wild Guess.
Everything Everything are an exceedingly tight band, dishing out no less than nine new songs, each one bolstered by the dynamic voice and excellent stage presence of front man Jonathan Higgs, who’s vocal range is a blast to behold and his falsetto fantastic.
The End Of The Contender has become a popular daytime radio hit and had the crowd clapping and singing along early, whilst Buddy Come Over and Enter The Mirror are already firm fan favourites. From 2022’s Raw Data Feel, an album on which Artificial Intelligence was used for some text and artwork, there was the excellent Pizza Boy, Metroland Is Burning and Teletype which had the crowd grooving along as did Kemosabe and the marching band style drumming of Cough Cough from 2013’s Arc album.
With Higgs’ really strong harmonies and the effortless talents on display from bassist Jeremy Pritchard, guitarist Alex Robertshaw, drummer Michael Spearman, and touring musician Pete Sene on keyboards, the band showcased their power in a live setting.
There was very little between song chatter preferring to let their songs do the talking for them, which they did as Photoshop Handsome had the crowd jumping around and main set closer Distant Past resulted in another mass sing along.
For the encore it was their 2023 single Cold Reactor which got the biggest reaction of all of the new songs and for Spring/Sun/Winter/Dread, Higgs did not even need to sing for the first minute, instead just extended the mic out and let the crowd run loose, before No Reptiles with its surreal lyrics brought a brilliant night of music to a close.
