Glenn Hughes was back at Rock City on Friday night as part of his Chosen Years Tour, and whilst it was a partisan crowd, they still made their presence felt as they indulged in a master class of musicianship.
At 74 years of age, he still remains one of the most intriguing and enjoyable artists around today having cemented himself as a bona fide legend with a CV that can rival any other of the best musicians out there. The appeal of Hughes is as present today as it ever was when he was performing with Trapeze and Deep Purple and the supergroup, Black Country Communion.
Joining him on stage was guitarist Soren Anderson and drummer Ash Sheehan, who helped him deliver a set list that was a combination of the old and the brand new as the crowd were treated to a journey that stopped at many points of his fantastic career.
The night exploded with the heavy groove of Soul Mover followed by the bluesy thump of the Hughes and Pat Thrall classic, Muscle And Blood. This was followed by the emotional new solo track, Voice In My Head, which quickly established the quality of his voice for the evening.
The set continued with the powerful Can’t Stop The Flood and the reflective new song Chosen. There was a surprising inclusion of the deeply funky Tony Iommi collaboration, Grace/Dopamine, and Trapeze songs, Way Back To The Bone and Medusa were also very well received.
Finishing the main set with a Black Country Communion song, Stay Free, the encore began with Coast To Coast which saw Hughes on the stage on his own with just his acoustic guitar, before Black Country, and the song that the crowd had waited all night for, the dazzling Burn, which saw support act Sophie Lloyd return to the stage for a duelling of guitars as they closed the set exactly as it started with euphoria and nostalgia.
