Kenny Thomas was at the Royal Concert Hall on Sunday for the final night of his Outstanding Greatest Hits Tour, and his loyal following were not disappointed as he took them on a trip down memory lane.
Opening with the up tempo Got It On Time, he immediately captivated with his unmistakable voice that has been deemed to be one of the best soul voices that the UK has ever produced. As he effortlessly glided over the song’s melodies, he delivered a pure soul rush that had the crowd on their feet from the start.
Thirty six years ago Thomas was a regular visitor to the charts and his faithful fans wanted to hear his big hits of the nineties and they were suitably rewarded with Stay, Destiny and his 1990 hit, Outstanding.
Backed by a stellar backing band of talented musicians, Thomas encouraged the crowd to pretty much dance and sing through the whole show, and they duly obliged, only stopping to appreciate some of the slower songs. The quality on offer both musically and vocally was nothing short of top drawer.
There was the extremely soulful Best Of You which was followed up with Tender Love, Crazy World and Him, the title track from his third album. The final half of the set featured a cover of Lou Rawls You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine which was a real highlight and which saw Thomas’ voice being the star of the show.
Of course there was the song that everyone had been waiting for, the mighty smash hit Thinking About Your Love which had the crowd screaming in delight. Finishing with I Found Lovin’ and a cover of Gwen McCrae’s Keep The Fires Burning, the timeless Thomas delivered a wonderful nostalgic evening of feel good, foot tapping music, that came to an end all too soon.
