Bros were one of the biggest bands in the world in the 80’s, especially in England where they attracted Beatles or Take That levels of fandom. The trio comprising twins Matt and Luke Goss and bassist Craig Logan had several hits before they split in 1992, Luke going on to have a successful acting career whilst Matt was at the Royal Concert Hall on Wednesday night to perform his Hits And More Tour.
The fact that Matt had an eleven year residency in Las Vegas is extraordinary. All of those years in LA have worked wonders because it was like he had opened a suitcase full of Nevada showbiz atmosphere the minute he walked on stage and it seeped into the pores of the sparse and disappointing crowd.
Opening with their 1988 hit I Owe You Nothing, Goss had set the tone for the rest of the evening. With a voice that has lost none of its luscious tones, he delivered a number of covers, including Stevie Wonder’s I Wish, Ray Charles’ I’ve Got A Woman, Frankie Beverly’s Joy And Pain which was mashed up with Disco Mona Lisa.
But it was his cover of Oasis’ Champagne Supernova that was a real highlight. Given that there are similarities between the Gallagher brothers and the Goss twins, in that they were both estranged, the Gallagher’s have made up their differences and whilst Bros united in 2017 to coincide with the Bafta winning documentary, After The Screaming Stops, a reconciliation is a million miles away.
With a backing band of nine very talented musicians Life’s A Stage, We Are Not Broken and The Beautiful Unknown all hit the spot as did a jazzed up version of When Will I Be Famous? which had the audience on their feet.
Having reinvented himself completely since his boy band days, Matt Goss’ stage magic was undeniable as were his laugh out loud gags and his Michael Bublé levels of humble honesty.
