Veteran performer Michael Ball returned to the Royal Concert Hall on Saturday night to deliver a set that left the crowd absolutely thrilled. Touring to promote the release of his twenty-third album, Glow, this double Olivier Award winner, Grammy nominee and multi platinum selling artist had the crowd firmly in the palm of his hand as he opened with new song, Best Night Of Your Life.
Accompanied on stage by his eight piece orchestra and two female backing singers, he delivered a sterling cover of The Persuaders’ Some Guys Have All The Luck. The title track of the album got a spectacular airing as did the moving You which he also penned. Favourites abounded and The Rose didn’t disappoint as he demonstrated the beautiful quality of his voice, as he did on He Lives In You from The Lion King which saw another powerhouse of a delivery.
Support act Liss Jones joined him on stage for the delightful How Do We Get Back There and a cover of Celine Dion’s The Prayer which was rapturously received. With two impressive weapons in his arsenal, the first being his magnificent and stunning vocal range and the second being his twinkly charm that makes him adored by many, he was clearly a born entertainer.
The crowd were silenced for the slow and very moving Empty Chairs At Empty Tables and the showstopper Stars, both from Les Miserables. Ball also proved that he can rock which he did in style with Vintage, Let’s Just Dance and main set closer, You Can’t Stop The Beat.
With his powerful and sometimes electric vocals he brought his show to a close with fans favourite, Love Changes Everything, new song On With The Show before he reached a parting crescendo with Elvis’ The Wonder Of You wining a well earned standing ovation in the process.
