American singer, guitarist and songwriter, Myles Kennedy is usually more at home fronting rock band Alter Bridge, or supporting Slash along with his Conspirators, but on Friday night he was sailing solo at Rock City, touring in support of his latest album, The Art Of Letting Go.
With no grand fanfare, he walked onto the stage accompanied by drummer Zia Uddin positioned in the far corner of the stage and bassist Tim Tournier and opened with the title track of the album, a powerhouse rock and roll banger that instantly got the crowd going, and from that moment on he had them in the palm of his hand.
Treating the crowd to an evening full of blues soaked rock; he followed up with another new song Nothing More To Gain which reinforced the vibe of the album. With his signature jaw dropping vocal style, every note of Devil On The Wall, A Thousand Words and Tell It Like It Is saw every note packed with raw emotion, soaring effortlessly over his incredible guitar playing.
Behind The Veil is another new track which went down a storm. A massive extended guitar solo dominated the middle of the song, taking it to another level, whilst Love Can Only Heal, and Year Of The Tiger provided the sing along opportunities, with both songs being up there with the best of his catalogue.
Kennedy is a humble guy who was clearly touched by the warmth of the Nottingham crowd, and what made the night special was his personality. Between songs he cracked jokes, told stories and had the crowd laughing. But it was the musicianship of the trio that kept the songs driving and punching all night. They made it look so easy, every riff and vocal running like a master class in rock.
Finishing the main set with The Stride and an encore of Say What You Will, Kennedy delivered tender moments, full throttle rockers, but all delivered with the energy and passion that was impossible to resist.
