The former Nottingham University sociology student, Myles Smith, is certainly making a huge splash on the music scene, and for an artist who spent his teens on the open mic circuit and used Tik Tok during the pandemic to get himself noticed, he is selling out venues across the UK and Rock City on Saturday night was no exception.

Yet to release his debut album his set relied heavily upon previously released EP material that allowed the crowd to sing along to every song. From the moment that he stepped on to the stage, the energy in the room shifted and the crowd were completely captivated by his presence and incredible vocal talent as he delivered an unforgettable performance.

Opening with Wait For You he followed up with Behind before Betting On Us showcased the mix of his vulnerability and his confidence. The upbeat yet melancholic Solo embraced an eight minute sing along from a crowd who hung on his every word before he delivered an emotional and fabulous My First Heartbreak, a beautifully raw acoustic song that captured the complex relationship between Smith and his absent father and which was a real highlight.

The phone torches were out for last year’s fiddle tinged catchy Nice To Meet You before he finished his main set with the soulfully anthemic Little By Little. For his encore he continued to deliver a heartfelt and inclusive performance with his hit single My Home and the powerful River. But it was Stargazing that had the crowd going wild, a song so good that he had to do it twice.

On this performance Smith had cemented his place as one of the most promising up and coming artist on the scene today. And whilst it is easy to be cynical when artists are declared as being the next big thing, in the case of Myles Smith his talent is too great to be written off as mere hype. With the Motorpoint Arena just a short walk from Rock City, it will not be long before he is regaling Saturday night to the crowd when he undoubtedly makes the step up to the city’s larger venue.
