Samantha Fish was at Rock City on Friday night to deliver her own brand of blues and the crowd instantly knew that they were in for a musical treat of epic proportions.

From the moment that she took to the centre of the stage, she oozed swagger and self confidence as she delivered a set list that was chosen from across her albums and she barely paused for breath as she opened with MC5’s Kick Out The Jams.

With an array of guitars behind her which she swapped regularly on the likes of Wild Heart and Better Be Lonely, her swirling powerful vocals had never sounded better and was especially effective on a superb rendition of Chills And Fever and later in the set a frenetic version of Miles To Go which epitomised the electrically charged vibe of the night.

When she launched into Bulletproof she commanded the attention of the crowd before she finished the main set with Black Wind Howlin’, the title track from one of her most critically acclaimed albums which saw her and her band deliver a ten minute performance that left the crowd euphoric with its thrashing guitar crescendo.

For the encore her version of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ I Put a Spell On You was just breathtaking, showcasing her remarkable talent. She effortlessly reached the high notes and the unaccompanied ending left the crowd in sheer awe.

For the last number, Goin’ Down South she was joined by Zac Schulze, a member of the opening act as they delivered a truly raucous version that saw the guitarists trade solos for over ten minutes of pure blues.

Fish played the guitar like a demon all night, playing extended solos left right and centre. She delivered a gig that was one of intensity, high energy and sheer brilliance.
