Wet Leg were at Rock City on Monday night to celebrate the release of their second album, Moisturizer, and there was a change to the line-up from the last time that they played Nottingham.
They were initially touted as a female fronted duo led by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers but the latter’s crippling anxiety means that she is more comfortable playing at the back of the stage, leaving Teasdale to command the centre. Flanked by new band members bassist Ellis Durand, drummer Henry Holmes and guitarist Josh Mobaraki, Teasdale is fast becoming one of the most imposing front people of her age.
With a mighty nineteen songs in the set most of their self titled debut album and Moisturizer were played as they opened with new song Catch These Fists which set the pace and didn’t let up. And with enough dynamics within the set for Teasdale’s vocal range to shine, they quickly followed up with the immense Wet Dream, Oh No and Supermarket that had the sold out crowd singing along.
New song Davina McCall went down a treat whilst Pillow Talk, probably the heaviest sex song released this year, sounded particularly beefy. Other new tracks such as Pond Song and Don’t Speak are instant crowd pleasers and showed just how adept Wet Leg are at crafting songs that are capable of seeping into musical consciousness, becoming instant classics and undeniable earworms.
The closing quartet of Angelica, Chaise Longue, CPR and Mangetout showed the promise of this still relatively new band who have pulled off something no other UK band has in the last decade having cracked America, won Brits and Grammys, been covered by Robbie Williams and Harry styles and have a fan base that has crossed the generations.
Having whipped up the crowd into a furore with their short spikey songs, and if their apparently already completed third album maintains their high standards, it could push Wet Leg supersonic with larger venues beckoning.
