There was a real buzz around Rock City on Saturday night as You Me At Six took to the stage for the first of three sold out gigs in Nottingham, because after over twenty-one years together as a band they have announced that they are splitting up at the end of this tour.

Opening with the slow burning Room To Breathe and Loverboy saw front man Josh Franceschi immediately command the stage as guitarists Max Helyer and Chris Miller held up the flanks. Bassist Matt Barnes and drummer Daniel Flint complete the quintet who together delivered an onslaught of career defining songs and fans favourite.

The party really did start as they launched into the tongue in cheek fun that is Save It For The Bedroom before Deep Cuts with its extended intro had everyone singing along. A breath was taken for Stay With Me before a litany of songs such as Give, Fresh Start Fever, and Straight To My Head saw Franceschi dancing, jumping and lunging across the stage with boundless energy.

There was also a depth in their set with genuine gentle moments like Mixed Emotions before Franceschi and Helyer launched into an acoustic version of Liquid Confidence. They may be winding down but they put in a real shift during the ninety minute farewell and as the main set came to a close with the highly emotional Take On The World and the anthemic Beautiful Way, a choir like response was triggered from the crowd.

Returning for a three song encore they took two songs, Bite My Tongue and Reckless from the bands most loved album, Sinners Never Sleep, and the whole evening was brought to an end with Underdog. As the crowd left Rock City there was the inevitable sense that You Me At Six’s split comes too soon, but after over two decades the pop punk veterans have little to prove.
